About Me:
Hi! I’m Paul, an ecologist and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technician from Manchester. I love exploring how nature and technology can work together to make our towns and cities greener and healthier places to live.

I’ve always loved the outdoors, walking and cycling in nature, spotting wildlife, and exploring maps. That curiosity led me to study Environmental Management at university and later complete a PhD all about how city green spaces, like parks and wild land, help the environment and people. When I’m not working, I enjoy hiking, gaming, cooking and reading about history, science and geography.

How I use Geography in my work:
My job uses a lot of geography! I study where different habitats, plants, and animals are found, and how they all connect across the landscape. I also use maps, satellites, and computers to understand how land is used and how it changes over time — that’s where GIS (Geographic Information Systems) comes in. It’s basically making smart digital maps that help us see patterns in nature.
Just like when you learn about maps, ecosystems, or climate change in school, I use those same ideas in real life to help protect habitats, animals, and biodiversity, and to support more sustainable ways for people and nature to share the planet. -
My Work:
I work with maps, computers, and field surveys to study plants, animals, and the environment. My job helps people make better decisions about land, nature, and biodiversity.

I’m an ecologist and GIS technician, which means I look after nature using both science and technology.
Out in the field, I survey habitats these are places where animals and plants live. I might record what species are growing in an area, check for protected animals like bats or badgers, or measure soil and water quality.
Back in the office, I use GIS (Geographic Information Systems)Â special computer software that helps me create and study maps. These maps show where wildlife lives, how land is used, and how areas can be improved to help nature.
My work helps protect green spaces, guide new developments, and make cities better for both people and wildlife. -
My Typical Day:
Everyday is different as as an ecologist and map maker, different surveys for different animals and habitats and different maps to make. For instance, a day usually starts around 8 a.m., and I’m at work by 9—sometimes in the office, sometimes working from home. I get an hour for lunch and sometimes we go out for a team meal, or day out to an attraction to do with nature. We also have competitions in the office too, like baking nature themed cakes, or quizes. From spring until autumn half of my time is spent outside in the countryside or in the city depending on what surveys I have to do.

Some days I’m out in the countryside doing a badger survey! This is where I set up camera traps to capture videos and photos of badgers at night and look for signs of their activity, like footprints, burrows (called setts), and paths through the grass. In the afternoon, I use mapping software to mark where I found each sign so we can understand how the badgers use their habitat. Later, I get to watch the night-time clips and photos, sometimes spotting playful badger cubs exploring after dark! Other days I can be sampling water from ponds for amphibian DNA to check for their presence in the water and provide protection. All of these activities need a report to be made to tell the client what we found or did not find and these are usually written inbetween doing outside surveys.

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I won the £500, I’d use it to create an online story map about badger ecology and mapping. It would include photos, short explanations, and GIS maps showing how ecologists study wildlife. This would share my work with a wide audience without needing ongoing events or travel.
