I have lived in Bristol for 8 years since I left uni (University of Leeds where I studied Geography), I love this city because it has loads of great restaurants, the beautiful harbourside, and there is always something new to do. I have been part of a street dance troupe since I moved here, and I also do lots of cycling out into the countryside. I am really interested in politics and read a lot about it in my spare time.
I loved my geography degree, and i particularly loved learning about population, cities, and equality. When I was at university I realised that all these things are closely related to health, and I learnt about the public health profession. I did a Masters degree whilst working in my first job in public health, and I’ve never looked back! I also love data, and I’ve built skills in data analysis and coding, which have helped me get interesting and challenging jobs.

How I use Geography in my work:
Geography, particularly human geography, is all about how people in different places experience life differently. My job is all about how health varies between different groups of people and between different parts of Wales, so I use my geography skills to think about why and how this variation happens (sometimes called epidemiology) – why do people in more rural areas tend to live longer? How can we make sure people in poorer parts of Wales has the same opportunity to live a healthy life as people in richer parts of Wales?

I am a Lead Analyst at Public Health Wales, which is the national public health agency in Wales. We work to protect and improve health and well-being and reduce health inequalities for the people of Wales. My job is about using data to understand how healthy people in Wales are and work out what we can do to help people live healthier lives – this is public health and epidemiology.

My Typical Day:
In a typical day, I get to my desk (upstairs in my house!) and check my emails while I eat some breakfast. I spend my work day writing code, looking at datasets, and meeting with my colleagues. I’ll often go for a walk at lunch and do a workout at home during a break. I finish work around 5pm.

Education:
I went to comprehensive school and sixth form in Durham and studied 10 GCSEs and 3 A levels. I also did an ‘Extended Project Qualification’ at A level which helped me explore health geography more and work out that this is what I was really interested in.
I went to the University of Leeds and studied BA Geography. I also did a year in industry whilst at uni, where I worked in data analysis in the NHS. This really helped with job applications, and helped me start developing data skills which I have used ever since.
I also did a Masters in Public Health at the University of Bristol. I did this part time whilst I was working.
